Canggu is the expat HQ of Bali. Here you will find an abundance of impeccably designed cafes, co-working spaces, and never-ending nightlife, all within a few mile radius. Although Canggu takes the cake when it comes to entertainment, the area may not offer the picturesque, turquoise-reef Bali you see advertised. Instead, you'll mostly find murky waters plagued by the daily downpours of rain and crowded beaches. However, in terms of longevity in Indonesia, Canggu offers a perfect place to stay for a month or a year with access to almost anything necessary for an extended stay.
It should be noted that traffic in Canggu is hectic and the fastest (and really, only) way to get around is via motorbike, as there are few sidewalks and driving cars through the congested streets is just not feasible. Riding a two-wheeled vehicle in a third-world country can be a daunting task. However, there are other options, such as Go-jek, Bali's Uber for scooters.
The food scene in Canggu is also enviable. Whether you're craving Asian-fusion or Italian, the worldwide culinary influence is unmatched in terms of price (think $5 sushi and $3 ramen)—imported items such as liquor and wine are in still in line with most American prices Whether you're in Bali for a couple of weeks or a few months, I recommend spending at least a day or two exploring Canggu as you'll find some of the best design in the country in both restaurants and shops.
